UAB Admission Requirements

Bachelor of Science Programs

UAB employs a holistic approach when reviewing candidates for admission to the university. Consideration for admission is based on three critical performance factors: (1) strength of curriculum, (2) grade point average (GPA), and (3) ACT or SAT scores. All applicants are considered on an individual basis.

Freshman Applicants (High School Student and Home Schooled Student)

  • Required Academic Units:
    • 4 years of English
    • 3 years of social science
    • 3 years of math (Algebra I and higher)
    • 3 years of science (including 2 lab sciences)
    • 1 year of foreign language
    • 3 additional core courses, for a total of 17 core courses

Non-Traditional Freshman Applicants

  • Students who graduated from high school four or more years ago and have not attended college or have attended college earning fewer than 24 semester hours.
    • Minimum high school grade point average of 2.75 or minimum score of 520 on the GED test.

Transfer Applicants

  • Students who have completed at least 24 transferable college semester hours.
    • A cumulative GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) after completing 24 semester hours of transferable college-level work.
    • Good academic standing at all of the other colleges or universities you’ve attended.

Test Scores

  • ACT/SAT Test Report (Freshman)
  • Official ACT score reports should be sent to the following school code: 0056
  • Official SAT score reports should be sent to the following school code: 1856

Master of Science in Management Information Systems

Applicants for the MS MIS program must have graduated with a baccalaureate degree in an information technology/systems related field from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Those not meeting this requirement must have:

  • Completed a baccalaureate degree in other areas of study from a regionally accredited college or university, or completed another graduate degree; AND
  • Completed the UAB MS MIS Bridge Program; OR
  • Submitted evidence to UAB as to significant work experience in IS/IT/computer programming, enterprise systems, databases, and/or system design and analysis; OR
  • Submitted evidence to UAB as to IS/IT/Computer industry certifications in computer programming, enterprise systems, databases, and/or system design and analysis.

No GMAT/GRE required.

Application Requirements (MS MIS)

  • Online application with a $70 application fee or $85 international application fee
  • Current resume
  • 3 letters of recommendation: at least 1 must be a professional reference
  • Personal statement: statement must include the student’s professional applications and how they faced and overcame challenges in their life

International Applicants (MS MIS)

International applicants whose native language isn’t English are required to show proof of English proficiency by submitting a TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic test score. Official test scores are required and should be sent directly from the testing agency to UAB. Scores should not be more than 2 years old.

The minimum score requirements are as follows:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 on the paper-based examination, 213 on the computerbased version, or 80 on the Internet-based version
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) score of 6.5 overall with at least a 5.0 on each section of the examination

Master of Accounting Admission Requirements

To be eligible for this program, students must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in accounting from an institution accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International within the 5-year period immediately preceding the desired term of enrollment

OR

  • Completion of the Bridge Program, maintaining at least a B (for applicants who do not have an undergraduate accounting degree, or received a degree in accounting more than five years ago).Individuals who do not meet the minimum Master of Accounting admission requirements may appeal the Bridge Program requirements. The Accounting Department will review these applicants on a case-by-case basis to determine whether or not some, or all, of the Bridge requirements may be waived.
  • GMAT score of 480 within the 5-year period immediately preceding the desired term of enrollment (waiver available for UAB Bachelor degree graduates, those completing the UAB Accounting Bridge Program, and other qualified applicants on a case-by-case basis.)
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
  • Copy of resume or curriculum vitae
  • 3 letters of recommendation/reference (1 professional reference strongly recommended)

Bridge Application Process
Students applying for the online Bridge Program complete the same application form as Bachelor of Science in Accounting applicants but must select “yes” for question #10, “Are you pursuing the Bachelors to Masters Bridge Program?” The application can be can found at: https://www.uab.edu/students/admissions/myuab?from=embanet.

Master of Business Administration Program

To be eligible for the Master’s program, students must meet the following qualifications:

  • Hold a Bachelor degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
  • Copy of resume or curriculum vitae detailing progressive professional work experience
  • 3 letters of recommendation/reference (1 professional reference strongly recommended)
  • Complete the online application and pay application fee of $70 for domestic applicants and $85 for international applicants
  • Supplemental Essay (to be uploaded into online application): In 500 to 1000 words, please discuss the factors that have influenced your education and career decisions to date. Please describe your professional development to date, and your goals for the future. How will the MBA or MAC influence your ability to achieve your goals?
  • Once accepted, complete Business Math preparatory assessment for those applicants without a “PreCalculus” course with a “C” or better in the past 5 years
  • GMAT waiver available for applicants with relevant academic and professional experience
