“UAB’s MS MIS is a great program!” – Damarcus Jones
Damarcus Jones, an upcoming 2021 graduate of the Collat School of Business’ online Master of Science in Management Information Systems program with a concentration in IT Management, recently completed a career transition from being a health and safety professional to an IT professional at Chevron Corporation.
Upon entering UAB’s online MS MIS program, Damarcus’ goal was to get a good educational foundation for his new career in IT.

He has been impressed with the quality of education UAB has offered online. “The lectures and discussions held have been engaging just as if we were in-person,” he said. “The professors were always available to meet the needs of my peers and I, and demonstrated patience when answering questions.”
When asked about balancing the demands of study with his everyday life, Damarcus responded, “I am a full-time working professional, married with a 4-year old. Creating a schedule with my wife and staying organized and ahead of due dates in my courses was critical to my success.”
Real-world application
After graduation, Damarcus plans to pursue an IT leadership track in his career and has already successfully integrated knowledge learned into his role as a Business Intelligence Analyst and SAFe Advanced Scrum Master at Chevron.
Completing UAB’s online MS MIS program has reinforced his technical knowledge where he learned what it’s going to take to be a successful IT leader. “I was able to increase my competence in analytics, business strategy, cybersecurity, data science, IT governance, leadership and software coding,” he said.
When asked about how the program was going to help him prepare for the future, Damarcus felt one key takeaway was learning how important IT leadership is. Not just from a management perspective, but also knowing how to effectively align, inspire and motivate individuals within an organization to maximize value.
