Chuck Hall recently graduated from the Collat School of Business’ online Master of Accounting program, which he started as a bridge student. UAB’s bridge program allows those without an undergraduate degree in accounting to take foundation courses before beginning the program’s core classes. Chuck came into the program with his bachelor’s degree in psychology and seven years of experience in social work. His goal was to build on his interests in business and gain a deeper understanding of accounting principles and concepts.
UAB’s online accounting experience
“The online course format was a new experience for me. In the absence of a set schedule, the format encouraged discipline and internal motivation to succeed,” Chuck said. “I found the professors to be approachable and supportive in my efforts to understand and master the material. Often, they would host online review sessions to help with exams or projects. The availability of office hours with the online format was extremely helpful.”With balancing the demands of study in his life, he found dedicating a few hours each day along with longer studying or review periods on the weekend to be beneficial. “The online format was great in that I had access to the lectures and material whenever I had a free moment to study or review,” Chuck said. “Overall, I was still able to go on family vacations and make my kids’ sports games while keeping up with the coursework. It really helped me to stay organized and budget my time.”
Since graduating from UAB with his Master of Accounting degree, Chuck has been studying for the CPA exam. His goal is to further develop his understanding of accounting in an effort to become a Certified Public Accountant. “I’m excited to explore the various opportunities in accounting!” he exclaimed. The accounting curriculum at UAB gave Chuck the knowledge he needed to succeed in his current role in risk management. “Being able to understand the technical aspects of accounting along with having confidence in my ability to perform research when needed allows me to provide valuable support to my team,” Chuck said. “I feel the program has developed my understanding of accounting and prepared me for future learning and success.”
